Preventative Dentistry
Regular dental check-ups are the key to maintaining good oral health and addressing any issues that may arise. Typically, oral hygiene visits are scheduled every six months. This can help prevent many of the problems that lead to decay and tooth loss, and is important in the early diagnosis and treatment of gum disease.
At each visit, your Dentist will carefully analyse your full mouth and give the most appropriate advice to assist in keeping your teeth and gums healthy for life.
Regular brushing and flossing is essential to ensure the care we take at your regular appointments is maintained. If you are unsure whether you are brushing and flossing your teeth correctly, your hygienist will be happy to advise you on this issue.
Healthy gums also need to be maintained to keep your teeth well-positioned and stable. Gum disease can begin for no apparent reason and can remain unnoticed for a considerable amount of time. Occasional bleeding and soreness can lead to the gums receding and teeth becoming unstable. This problem is treatable and can be prevented by taking good care of your gums and regular visits to your hygienist.
If your gums are not properly maintained, gum disease may occur. If this disease is not treated, it will destroy the gum tissue and bone, eventually leading to tooth loss.

Periodontal
Cottesloe Dental's Oral Hygiene team take care of routine gum health as well as treat periodontal disease. Periodontal Scaling and Root Planing is a conservative cleaning procedure. The purpose is to remove hard deposits and infection from beneath the gum and cleanse the root surfaces. When the causes of infection are removed, the gum tissues are allowed to heal and become healthy. This is most effective in the early stages of periodontal disease. With good home care, the need for future surgical correction may be eliminated.

Endodontics
Commonly referred to as Root Canal Treatment. This procedure is carried out to cure infection and save the tooth. This involves removal of the infected nerve, re-shaping of the nerve chamber and filling and sealing the tooth. Following root canal procedure a crown is normally placed to strengthen the remaining tooth.

Mouthguards
Dentists see many dental injuries, which could have been avoided or minimised by wearing a protective custom-fitted mouthguard. Sporting accidents are one of the most common causes of dental injury.
Why do you need a mouthguard?
A mouthguard helps absorb and spread the impact of a blow to the face that could result in an injury to your mouth or jaw. Damaged or dislodged teeth, broken jaws and cut lips are just some of the injuries that can occur if you don't protect your mouth. Dental injuries may result in time off school or work to recover, can be painful and may involve lengthy and expensive dental reconstruction. The cost of an injury far exceeds the cost of a custom-fitted mouthguard.
Custom-fitted mouthguards are made by taking an impression and creating a plaster model of your teeth. This ensures a comfortable, tight and correct fitting mouthguard.
Mouthguards need to be checked annually and may need to be replaced if new adult teeth have come through or the mouthguard has sustained a serious blow which may have damaged it.

Laser Dentistry
Laser dentistry can be a precise and effective way to perform many dental procedures whilst minimising pain and recovery time. Some of the common procedures which can be assisted with laser dentistry include:
- Crown lengthening
- Gummy smile correction
- Muscle attachment removal
- Removal of benign tumours
- Treatment of cold sores
Benefits of Laser Dentistry?
Here are some of the major benefits associated with laser dentistry:
- Procedures performed using soft tissue dental lasers may not require sutures (stitches).
- Certain laser dentistry procedures do not require anesthesia.
- Laser dentistry minimises bleeding because the high-energy light beam aids in the clotting (coagulation) of exposed blood vessels, thus inhibiting blood loss.
- Bacterial infections are minimised because the high-energy beam sterilises the area being worked on.
- Damage to surrounding tissue is minimised.
- Wounds heal faster and tissues can be regenerated.

Cad Cam Technology (Cerec)
CAD/CAM is an acronym that means computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing. CAD/CAM technology is used in dentistry to help dentists and dental lab technicians fabricate precise shapes and sizes for dental restorations, including inlays, onlays, crowns, and bridges. An advantage of CAD/CAM technology is that it can allow a typical two-visit tooth restoration to be accomplished in one visit.

Neuromuscular Dentistry
Headaches and Neck pain
Headache is one of the leading causes of visits to a doctor, leading to continual pain relief medication. Few people think of visiting a dentist for treatment! Your occlusion is what most people call their “bite”, or the way your teeth come together. What many people don’t realise is how far reaching a poor bite can be.
For example, did you know that a poor bite can be the cause of pain almost anywhere in the head and neck area? Headache is a prime example. Yet, headaches in the temple region are very commonly related to your bite, and correcting of the bite can do away with these headaches in many cases.
This of course is only one example and we will routinely use a thorough checklist with our patients to record any other symptoms that you might have, which are possibly related to your bite.
We look forward in assisting you, your friends or family you may know, who may be suffering with any of these issues. Please contact us for any further information you require or to discuss any of the above.
