Dr Phillip Keenan discusses DENTURES, as published in the Western Suburbs newspaper on 27th February 2018.

Dentures have been around for thousands of years, says Cottesloe Dental dentist Dr Phillip Keenan.

"The earliest recorded use of false teeth goes back to about the 7th century B.C., during which time the Etruscans made partial dentures from human or animals' teeth connected with gold bands," he said.

"Dentures were made from a variety of materials until the Second World War when acrylic was first used."

Acrylic is still used for dentures today as it is an easy to use material, hard wearing and can give excellent aesthetics making them almost indistinguishable from natural teeth.

"Although the numbers of patients needing full dentures is decreasing as people keep more of their teeth for longer there is still a need for them as dentures are often the quickest, easiest and cheapest way of replacing missing teeth, especially when many or all teeth have been lost," Dr Keenan said.

"Rest assured that at Cottesloe Dental we only use the most modern materials and methods."
