Western Suburbs - 7 Nov 2017 / Dr Luke Rodman discussing the importance of routine dental examinatio

Date Published: 21/11/2017

COTTESLOE Dental understands that a routine dental examination can help check more than your oral health.

"An unfortunate story recently made headlines when a Perth boy was diagnosed with a large and inoperable brain tumour", dentist Dr Luke Rodman said.

"What made this case of particular interest was that his doctors were unable to diagnose his aches and pains, yet his dentist was immediately alarmed by the symptoms."

"Through a simple test of getting the child to stick his tongue out which then swung to one side, he was able to confirm a serious problem was present which allowed a specialist to diagnose the cancer."

The dentists at Cottesloe Dental examine the head and neck region to check for a multitude of potential issues that manifest themselves in the oral cavity.

This can help diagnose a range of issues such as problems with the gastrointestinal system, nutritional deficiencies, connective tissue disorders, brain and nervous system problems, and hormone problems such as diabetes. From the age of one, it is recommended everyone has a dental check-up at least once every 12 months so problems can be pickup up and treated quickly.
